Q: Can I attach a leash to the receiver collar?
A: Do not attach a leash to the receiver collar. You may put a separate non-metallic collar on your dog’s neck and attach a leash. Be sure the extra collar does not interfere with the Contact Points.
Q: Can I change the operating mode on the handheld transmitter?
A: Yes! In fact if you go to our “videos” tab you can see our buddy Clay Thompson from SportDog walk you through changing the operating mode!
Q: Can I use the HoundHunter 3225 on aggressive dogs?
A: We do not recommend any of our products to be used on aggressive dogs. We recommend you contact your local veterinarian or professional trainer to determine if your dog might be aggressive.
Q: Can I use the HoundHunter 3225 with more than one dog?
A: Yes, SportDOG™ Add-A-Dog® Collar Receivers must be purchased and the Remote Transmitter must be changed to mode 4.
Q: Can my dog swill wear his tags on his training collar?
A: We recommend that loose tags be located on the top of the collar at the back of the dog’s neck. Metal tags coming in contact with the probes will not drain the battery but could cause a short that could cause the batteries to drain prematurely or even cause the system to stop working. Our name plates can be attached anywhere on the collar.
Q: Do I have to charge the handheld transmitter and collar receiver at the same time?
A: No, you can charge them separately if necessary.
Q: How do I know if my dog’s training collar is placed correctly on him?
A: If your dog has a long or thick coat, you have two options to ensure consistent contact: either trim the hair around the Contact Points or switch to the longer Contact Points included with your system. To ensure a proper fit, follow these steps: With your dog standing, center the Collar Receiver where the Contact Points are underneath your dog’s neck, touching the skin. If your dog has a long or thick coat, trim the hair around the Contact Points to ensure consistent contact. The Collar Receiver should fit snugly, yet loose enough to allow one finger to fit between the strap and your dog’s neck. Allow your dog to wear the collar for several minutes, and then recheck the fit. Check the fit again as your dog becomes more comfortable wearing the Collar Receiver.
Q: How do I program my receiver collar to the transmitter?
A: You can refer to the “Reset the Collar Receiver” section in your owner’s manual or see our video tab and Clay Thompson from SportDog can give you a step my step!
Q: How long can I continuously deliver stimulation to my dog?
A: The maximum amount of time you can press the Continuous Stimulation Button and deliver stimulation to your dog continuously is 8 seconds. After 8 seconds, the Remote Transmitter will “time out,” and the Continuous Stimulation Button must be released and pressed again.
Q: How old should my dog be to use the HoundHunter
A: Your dog should be able to learn basic obedience commands such as “Sit” or “Stay.” The Collar Receiver may be too large for dogs under 8 pounds.
Q: Is the stimulation safe for my dog?
A: While the stimulation is unpleasant, it is harmless to your dog. Electronic training devices require interaction and training from the owner to achieve desired results.
Q: Why can’t I leave the collar on the dog all the time?
A: Proper fit of the collar is important, but a collar worn for too long or made too tight on the dog’s neck may cause skin irritation or damage. Ranging from redness to pressure ulcers, this condition is commonly known as bed sores. It is also called decubitus ulcers or pressure necrosis. To help avoid the possibility of your dog developing this type of irritation or sores: Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day. When possible reposition the collar on the dog’s neck every 1 to 2 hours. Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure. Never connect a leash to the electronic collar; it will cause excessive pressure on the contacts. When using a separate collar for a leash, don’t put pressure on the electronic collar. Wash the dog’s neck area and the contacts of the collar weekly with a damp cloth. Examine the contact area daily for signs of a rash or a sore. If a rash or sore is found, discontinue use of the collar until the skin has healed. If the condition persists beyond 48 hours, see your veterinarian. These steps will help keep your dog safe and comfortable. Millions of dogs are comfortable while they wear stainless steel contacts. Some dogs are sensitive to contact pressure. You may find after some time that your dog is very tolerant of the collar. If so, you may relax some of these precautions. It is important to continue daily checks of the contact area. If redness or sores are found, discontinue use until the skin has fully healed. You may need to trim the hair in the area of the Contact Points or switch to the longer Contact Points to ensure consistent contact. Never shave the dog’s neck; this may lead to a rash or infection.
Q: What level should I use for my dog?
A: Always start at the lowest level and work your way up. For training efficiency, it is important to find the right intensity level for your dog. This is called the Recognition Level, at which your dog looks around in curiosity or flicks his ears. Every dog is different and you cannot predict where your dog’s Recognition Level will be. Watch closely for any slight change in behavior that tells you your dog is feeling the stimulation. With the Collar Receiver turned on and properly fitted to your dog, set the Remote Transmitter’s Intensity Dial at Level 1 and press the Continuous Stimulation Button for 1 to 2 seconds.
If your dog shows no reaction to Level 1, go to Level 2 and repeat the process. YOUR DOG SHOULD NOT VOCALIZE OR PANIC WHEN RECEIVING STIMULATION. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE STIMULATION LEVEL IS TOO HIGH AND YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS LEVEL AND REPEAT THE PROCESS. Once you find your dog’s Recognition Level, this is the level you should use when you begin a training exercise.
Q: Will I get the advertised range?
A: The range you get with your product will vary according to terrain, weather, vegetation, as well as transmission from other radio devices. Depending on the way you hold the Remote Transmitter, the maximum range may vary. For consistent results at longer ranges, hold the Remote Transmitter in a vertical position away from your body and above your head. Terrain, weather, vegetation, transmission from other radio devices, and other factors will affect the maximum range.
Q: Will the receiver collar that came with my system only work with the transmitter model that came with the system?
A: With the exception of the SD-1225, SD-1825 and the SD-1825CAMO (which are only compatible with each other), any of our SportDOG receivers will program to any of our SportDOG transmitters. Please refer to your Owners Product Guide for instructions on resetting the collar to the transmitter.
Q: Will the signal from my SportDog system interfere with other SportDog e-collars?
A: No. Each SportDOG system has its own frequency ID code so that other SportDOG systems will not experience conflicting signals. In the very rare event that this happens, please see Troubleshooting in your product manual for help on changing your product’s ID codes.
Q: What do the buttons on my SportDog HoundHunter 3225 do?
Q: How do I reset my collar receiver?
A: (Step 1) Turn the Collar Receiver off. (Step 2) Then press and hold the On/Off Button. The Receiver Indicator Light will come on and stay solid, and then turn off after 4-5 seconds. If the On/Off Button is released too early, the Receiver Indicator Light will begin flashing as normal. If this occurs, start over and repeat from step 1. (Step 3) After the Receiver Indicator Light has turned off, release the On/Off Button. (Step 4) Press and hold the ‘Continuous Stimulation’ button on the Remote Transmitter until the Receiver Indicator Light flashes 5 times. You may need to hold both units 2-3 feet from each other before this occurs. Once the Receiver Indicator Light has flashed 5 times, the Collar Receiver has been reset and will begin flashing as normal. If the Receiver Indicator Light does not flash 5 times, start over and repeat from step 1.
Q: My remote transmitter is sending a signal to more than one collar receiver.
A: In the rare event this occurs, you can change your Remote Transmitter’s ID Code (see Change ID Codes in your manual) to solve this.
Q: My dog is not responding when I press a button.
A: Check to see if the Collar Receiver has been turned on and the Indicator Light is flashing. If your range has reduced from the first time you have used it, please check to see if the battery is low in either the Remote Transmitter or Collar Receiver. Many factors can impact the range you have with the system. You can verify the Collar Receiver is delivering stimulation to your dog by placing the test light, enclosed in your kit, on the Collar Receiver. Increase the Intensity Dial. Increase the Stimulation Range. Make sure the Collar Receiver’s Contact Points are placed snugly against your dog’s skin. You may need to switch to the longer Contact Points included with your system or trim the hair beneath the Contact Points. If you notice your operating time dropping to about half the original time, your Collar Receiver battery needs to be replaced.
Q: The collar receiver is not responding to the remote transmitter.
A: Check to see if the Collar Receiver has been turned on. Make sure the collar and transmitter are programmed to work with each other. Check the batteries, they may need replaced or recharged. Reset the collar.
Q: My collar receiver won’t turn on/off.
A: remove the batteries and put them back in, making sure they are placed correctly. Make sure you have the right batteries in the system. Ensure the unit is on; press firmly and in the center of the button. Replace the batteries. If your collar uses rechargeable batteries make sure the collar has a solid light while on the charger. If there is no light on the collar while it’s charging, test the adapter.
Q: How do I use the test light tool?
A: Turn the collar receiver on, hold the test light contacts to the contact points. Press a stimulation button on the remote trainer. The test light will flash. The hight the stimulation level the brighter the test light will flash. Make sure you save your test light for future testing! See additional product photos for visual.
Q: My system’s battery life isn’t what it used to be and I have to charge it more often.
A: While the approximate battery life between charges is 40-60 hours your device has a lithium-ion (li-ion) battery. You should never incinerate, puncture, deform, short circuit, or charge with a non-recommended charger. Not following this warning can result in fire, explosion, property damage, or bodily harm. You can also risk explosion if the replacement battery is not the right type, make sure you dispose of used batteries properly. Batteries should never be removed from the battery compartment for charging. Do not charge the batteries in areas with a high temperature (100° F+). These batteries are not memory sensitive and do not need to be depleted prior to charging, nor can they be ‘over-charged’. The batteries come partially charged from the factory ad will require a full 2 hour charge prior to first use. When storing your trainer for extended periods you should regularly give the batteries a full 2 hour charge every 3 to 4 months. Expect hundreds of recharge cycles from your batteries however all rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time. This is normal! If your operating time drops to half of the original life you should contact us for a replacement battery.
