Let’s start with a big hell yeah for the Garmin Alpha XL!

The Alpha XL is proof that Garmin listens to its customers (most of the time). For those wondering, imagine a 10” DriveTrack (like the 10” Tread XL) combined with the Garmin Alpha 300. 

 With this setup, you’ll never again have to squint at the small screen on the Alpha 300 while trying to correct or train your dogs. The Alpha XL has all the training features of the 300 but with the easy touch of that big 10” touchscreen display. You can scroll through dog lists and dog groups with ease and transfer entire groups of dogs to and from the Alpha 300, Alpha 200 Plus, or other Alpha XLs!

As for range, we didn’t see any difference from the previous Alpha models when using the same antennas. The large Pro View compass screen is another big win. It lets me confirm which collars are on and deactivate the collars we’re not using that day.

Another huge plus with the Alpha XL is all the mapping options. I personally use TOPO and Birdseye combined. You can connect the Alpha XL to the free Garmin Alpha app and download your birdseye area in just minutes using Wi-Fi or your phone’s hotspot. You can also use the Garmin Huntview state chips for full-state mapping, which outdoor dog supply carries in every state. Also the Alpha XL can rotate the screen either vertical or horizontal—both work well, I personally mostly used it in the vertical due to truck space, but I liked horizontal because it covers more maps in 3-D mode.

Like the Garmin 300, the Alpha XL will hold multiple groups and track up to 250 dogs or handhelds. The Alpha XL will track all the same collars as the Astro 430, Alpha 100, Alpha 200(i), Alpha 200 Plus, and Alpha 300(i)—that includes the Garmin T5, TT10, TT15, and the newer T20 and TT25 collars. It also tracks all handhelds that transmit, plus it transmits your location so other hunters can see where you're at. It’s a great feature if you just want to keep track of where everyone’s at.

The AMPS mounting setup is another thing I love. It lets you use different size ball mounting setups. Here at Outdoor Dog Supply, we offer all kinds of mounting options to fit your needs, from rugged triple window mounts to aluminum seat bolt mounts, and even the cup holder mount I used this hunting season.

The only real negative we’ve found with the Garmin Alpha XL is that it won’t track unless there’s power to the Alpha XL base . So, if you’ve got a vehicle that doesn’t have a cigarette outlet (the only power cord provided with initial purchase) or one that cuts power when the engine’s off, you’ll need to hardwire the cigarette plug or get the Garmin Alpha XL hardwire kit.

For all our customers who spend any amount of time in their vehicles tracking dogs or chasing game, the Alpha XL is a no-brainer. And what’s even better is the $1200 price point—it’s $300 less than the Garmin 10” Tread and no more than the Garmin Alpha 300 and Drivetrack 71.
